Bear Aware
Because we live in excellent bear habitat, black bears are extremely common and grizzly bears sometimes inhabit the Sixmile and Ninemile Valleys. For information regarding sightings, reducing bear attractants around your home, preventing conflicts, and other bear related information, please give our Bear Aware contact folks a call or visit our Resources page:
- If you live in the upper Ninemile, please call Pat at 626-1610
- If you live in the lower Ninemile, please call Melissa at 626-1627
- If you live in the Sixmile Valley, please call Rickie at 626-4587
More about the BEAR AWARE PROGRAM.
Garbage Bin Loaner Program
Wildlife looting trash cans for food leads to problems for the animals and the people involved. It means not only a big, ugly mess and a destroyed garbage can for humans, but it also means the individual animal has learned where the easy treats occur and will come back again and again! Eventually, that animal becomes more accustomed and therefore dangerous to humans.
NWW, along with Allied Waste Services and others, has created a garbage bin loaner program directed at reducing these conflicts. Residents of the Ninemile and Sixmile Valleys are encouraged to try out bear-resistant garbage containers without a financial commitment and then, if interested, purchase them at a reduced price. There are 2 sizes of containers:
- 95 gallon residential roll-out carts similar to the curbside roll-out carts currently provided by Allied Waste Services and;
- 30-gallon screw-top containers that are ideal for storing pet food, bird seed, grains, and so on (although it is still best to keep these inside a building if possible).
The check-out time is 1 month. After 3 free check-outs, residents can purchase 95-gallon bear-resistant garbage containers at half-price ($110) through a cost-share program with Defenders of Wildlife. The 30-gallon containers are $35 each. For more information or to check out a container, please call Pat at 626-1610.
